American Made, American Proud!

THE MAJESTIC BREED

Did you ever wonder why the American Pit Bull Terrier sits so proud? It's because this is a royal breed of great American heritage dating back more than a century, hence the nickname, "Dog's of Velvet & Steel".

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER

The Beginning of Greatness

The Beginning of Greatness

The Beginning of Greatness

Until the mid-19th century the now extinct Old English Terriers and Old English Bulldogs were bred together to produce a dog that combined the gameness of the terrier with the strength and athleticism of the bulldog. This type of dog, which was bred in the British Isles, became known as the bull and terrier. These dogs arrived in the United States in the late nineteenth century where they became the direct ancestors of the American Pit Bull Terrier.

A True American Breed

Once the breed had been refined and established in it's current iteration it quickly spread in popularity throughout the fast growing United States. Breeders took pride in their personal stock. During those early years it wasn't unusual to use the breed as a working dog for it's unmatched performance and athleticism. And when the work was done, they made a perfect companion for the home.

On February 10, 1898, the breed was recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) named as American Pit Bull Terrier. This was a monumental moment for all the breeders and passionate owners. What they knew all along had finally been recognized as a genuine reproduceable bloodline and unique breed that distinguished itself from it's close cousins. America had it's own breed that embodied all the qualities that made America so great: strength, confidence, loyalty, no-nonsense mentality and determination, and damn good all-American looks to go along with it.

Today the Pitbull is as iconic as all things truly American, from apple pie and surfing in California to Corvettes, Cadillacs and pickup trucks. If the Bald Eagle hadn't already claimed the rightful place as our symbol of American greatness, the American Pit Pull Terrier could have easily taken the responsibility, as they share the same attributes, i.e. looks, stoic steely gaze, unmatched prowess and no compromise attitude. The breed is an American Movie star wrapped up in cowboy "get the job done" abilities and determination.
